Save a Billion Birds™ support birders of all stripes to enjoy, study, and protect birds from local threats in our communities. Offering ‘Biking for Birds™ Initiatives, the campaign emphasizes cross-border challenges related to wildlife trafficking, racism, and international conservation diplomacy.
Save a Billion Birds™ began as an attempt to mitigate the most direct bird killing substance: exposed window glass. At least one in ten birds die by flying into bird-killing glass windows. One by one, the numbers add up to over an astounding one billion birds every single year. Save a Billion Birds™ believes that every single life is important, and that no one should be harmed or taken without cause. Fixing bird-killing glass is an imperative, and can be achieved by any institution regardless of finances by responsible planning and action based in science.
Save a Billion Birds™ stresses ‘borderless conservation’ in accord with ZLI’s IDEA (inclusion, diversity, engagement and access) mandate. A migratory bird taken from the environment in the northern hemisphere (by window glass, habitat loss, pesticides or other factors), is also taken from their southern hemisphere homes. ZLI recognizes parallel challenges in the mindless take of birds by poorly structured architecture, and the structural racism that hinders nature access.
Inequitable access to nature, made evident by the #blackbirdersnetwork among others, prevents people from protecting birds. It mindlessly and needlessly restricts the capacity and desire to contribute to community well-being by engaging with wildlife. The Green Year anime eco-docudrama attempts to maintain focus on these issues, and when combined with ZLI’s Biking for Birds™ Initiative and ZLI's AWASH Product Loan™ program, provide actionable solutions to these interrelated challenges.

“The Green Year™” tells the story of Sam Robinson, Alabama son of a lynched man in the 1960s seeking to complete a ‘big year’, by traveling however possible despite sunset laws and segregation.
Unable to travel like white birders, Sam begins to collect dead migratory birds on the streets of Montgomery. Trouble soon comes, and he is forced to leave his beloved sisters on a trip that takes him from the American South through the Caribbean to Brazil, before an encounter with poachers sends him to Liberia and ultimately, to London.
Dedicating significant screen-time to individual bird species across its twenty-one episodes, "The Green Year" is an anime series that combines ornithology with access, and the value of science to positively impact all of our lives.
